Five civilians died and a further 18 were injured as one of the engines from the aircraft ploughed through the kithcen area of a secondary school |
One of the survivors, P/O J Low was injured and is said to have married the nurse who tended his wounds |
Alick was born on 23 February 1920 in Inverness, Scotland. His father was born in Dingwall, Scotland and his mother in Strathpeffer, Scotland. His father worked as a Distiller. He had two sisters, Margaret and Jessie. The schools he attended were: Ontario Street and Anderson Street schools, both in Windsor, 1930-1933; Gordon McGregor 1933-1935 and Walker Collegiate, Windsor 1935-1938. Also , Queens University, Kingston, Ontario 1938-1942 (B.Sc.) Metallurgical Engineering. Alick did the C.O.T.C. at Queen's Uni. in 1942. His sporting interests were tennis, skating and handball. Alick enlisted on 5 January 1943 and after training embarked from Halifax on 4 April 1944. He arrived in the U.K. at 3PRC on 12 April 1944 and went on to 1(0) AFU 9 May 1944, 22 OTU 13 June 1944, 61 Base 6 September 1944, 1666 CU 20 September 1944, and 426 Squadron 5 November 1944. |

Operation | Chemnitz- continuation of Operation Thunderclap. 760 aircraft. Severe icing conditions over home bases cost 9 aircraft, especially from 426 Sqn. A further 22 aircraft were lost on the operation. The centre and south of the city were badly damaged by fire. Several important factories were destroyed, including the Siegmar tank engine plant. |
